On Thursday the deer did not come.  The yellow corn sat on top of the snow uneaten.
I've lived here long enough to know that probably means a large snow is coming.  There
is someplace else the deer like to be when it snows heavily.  The birds were also scarce
but Friday the reason for that became obvious when a beautiful, red-breasted hawk came
and perched on one of the feeders.  Surprisingly, Mama and her yearlings came back
though snow was definitely on its way.

This morning we watched as a squirrel tunneled his way through the light powder.  He
swam through the snow diving under for a while then breaking the surface in a leap,
burrow, then leap again, and on in a very entertaining pattern like a dolphin.  Six black
crows perched in the tree above, startling dark against the white.  I often wonder if they
are somehow paid by the little birds to move a hawk on its way.  The snow is still piling
up but Mama and her yearlings have returned, the snow settles on their coats.  The birds
are also back.  They're enjoying the sunflower seeds Michael spilled at the base of the
poplar trees where the swirling winds left a nearly bare spot.  They gather to eat then
startle off, gather and startle off.  As they scatter, the flurry from sparrow, finch, and
cardinal wings etches the edges of the small snow-dell like the winds of a hundred years
might erode a mighty stone cliff.

Enjoy, Susan
